Organic clothes – Frugi
By dulwichmum | Friday, September 3, 2010
I am no longer the mother of a teeny tiny. I could have another baby if I wanted to (shrieks), I am still choc full of oestrogen you know! But my family is complete! I have an heir and a spare! Therefore, I have asked Helena, my super work colleague, to review these scrummy vetements on her perfect baby boy.
Name of product: Pond Dipper Snuggle Fleece, Jammin’ Layered Top and Froggy Jeans by Frugi
Price: £27, £18 and £24 respectively
The blurb: “We care what kids wear. All our lovely organic clothes for children and babies are made from 100% organic cotton which is better for everyone, from the farmers, their families and the Frugi factory workers, to your baby and children
Organic clothes are much softer and are kinder to eczema. Since no nasty chemicals or pesticides are involved, there’s nothing in the fabric to irritate the skin. The fibres in organic cotton are fatter and stronger, and because they don’t get bruised and battered along the way it feels much softer too
It’s better for the farmers as they get a fair premium for their crop and they work in a healthy, pesticide free zone
The planet is a happier place because the organic methods of farming encourage biodiversity. That means that there are lots of lovely plants and animals in the surrounding area!”
First impressions: The packaging for Frugi is just what you would expect, understated but with thoughtful touches. The brown paper packaging and gift boxing could look quite utilitarian but the subtle pastel coloured pencil drawings elevate it to being delightful and the blue tissue paper inside doubles up as a bonus for scrunching or your kids’ arts boxes!!! We couldn’t wait to get inside! The clothes are gorgeous and sublimely soft, wonderfully simple, classic and slightly funky designs. I couldn’t wait to get my little one into them
Ease of Use: Unwrap and go! My two year old is not quite that co-ordinated so it took several go’s before they went on the right way, the handy reversible sweatshirt meant anyway but upside down worked well
Pros: The soft organic cotton clothing felt like a dream on my little one’s skin that gets easily irritated as he has eczema and gets itchy very easily. The tags on the labels are adorable doubling up as gift tags or farmyard animals for your poppets. The brochure describes their story and gives you a warm fuzzy glow for contributing to charity and buying a fair-trade product that aims to be environmentally friendly and having the coolest kid on the block. It’s a win, win situation!
Cons: You have to get pregnant again just to try on their adult feeding/maternity tops! At least I now know where to get clothes that will fit cloth nappies; I’ll be the envy of all Stokey mummies (Stokey is somewhere obscure, North of the river apparently)
Value for money:. 5/5

Minifigures, The all new series 2! – LEGO
By dulwichmum | Wednesday, August 25, 2010
Name of product: LEGO Minifigures – the all-new Series 2!
Price: £1.99
The blurb: “LEGO Minifigures has been the undisputed collectable toy craze of the summer, shooting to number 1 in the UK toy charts since launch in May. With many shops selling out of Series 1 Minifigures by the end of July, kids can’t wait for the new gang to be up for grabs! From 1st September the eagerly anticipated Series 2, with 16 brand new characters, will be in shops in time to take back to school: let the swapping begin…
Each series features 16 never seen before characters. Highlights of the Series 2 line up include a Disco Dude with funky ‘fro and a cool Surfer with rad surf board. The range also includes Explorer, Karate Master, Lifeguard, Mariachi, Mime Artist, Pharaoh, Pop Star, Ringmaster, Skier, Spartan Warrior, Traffic Cop, Vampire, Weightlifter and the Witch. The Minifigure combines easily with all classic LEGO bricks and parts. Its head is one LEGO brick high and its body is three bricks high.”
First impressions: Brightly coloured sealed pack, obscure the figure within! My darling 8 year old son became very exciting – “which figure have I got?”
Ease of Use: “Tear the bag open and see which mini figure I have…What fun!” Bless! – (wipes tear from eye)
Pros: Perfect Max tells me that these figures come with very rare parts, making them very collectible, “great for building and making your own figures. It is very satisfying to get a figure you are looking for. These are very swappable – great to take to school”
Cons: According to Max, it could be quite frustrating if you keep getting a LEGO minifigure you already have. Some schools don’t allow you to do any swapping as they can cause arguments.
Value for money:. Good value for money – “especially if you manage to get one of the rare figures with cool pieces”

Stockists: from early September and can be found at Argos, Tesco, WH Smith, John Lewis, Smyths, and Toys R Us
