title pic Despicable Me!

Posted by dulwichmum on Mon 20 September 2010

Name of product: “Despicable me” film in 3D. by Universal Pictures, in your cinemas from October 15th.

The blurb: “When a criminal mastermind uses a trio of orphan girls as pawns for a grand scheme, he finds himself profoundly changed by the growing love between them”

First impressions: This is one of those films that appeals to both boys and girls – ideal family entertainment with no fisticuffs! I have a son of eight and a daughter of seven, and they were both really excited about going to this. It is actually the first time I have seen a 3D animation and when I was handed the glasses, along with the bin of popcorn and vat of pop, I was feeling a little overwhelmed by all of the cinema accessories – am I being hormonal? I am more like the lead character,Gru, than I care to admit…

Ease of Use: OHMYGOD! The animation was stunning. The glasses were comfortable and I actually forgot I had them on. They don’t interfere with your viewing at all.

The strangely shaped Gru, with his Eastern European accent and environmentally unfriendly vehicle, hatches a plan to steal the moon. Who cares that doing so will throw Earth out of whack? He figures this is the best way to compete with Vector (Jason Segel), a nerdy, up-and-coming villain whose retro-cool lair resembles a boutique hotel. The stars of the show are the Minions: tiny, yellow, pill-shaped creatures with one eye and sometimes two who carry out Gru’s evil deeds. At least, they try. But they’re also super-cute: bouncing around, reveling in mischief and babbling to each other in their own gibberish. Minions will, no doubt, make great stocking fillers this Christmas.

Pros: This film will entertain both boys and girls of all ages, James and I laughed our socks off too! There were a couple of references just for the adults – like “The Bank of Evil” had a sign with “formerly Lehman Brothers” written underneath. My husband almost inhaled his popcorn!

The 3D animation was breathtaking, we were all on a roller coaster with the characters – it really was stunningly good and it took our breath away. My children can’t wait for the film to come out in cinemas

Cons: Boys love rudeness. This film will not disappoint. At one point, a minion misheard an order and created a Fart gun instead of a Dart gun and my son has been laughing about that for 24 hours now. A great way to spend a rainy afternoon

Value for money:. 5/5

Dulwichmum verdict: ★★★★★

Stockists: Coming to a cinema near you on 15th October. Don’t miss it!
