At the school gate this morning, several of my chums talked of the current financial downturn. The situation is sure to impact on everyone and is simply too depressing (sniff – no, seriously).

In an effort to support clients’ current precarious financial situation, Net-a-porter has announced that it is prepared to deliver in unmarked vans and in discreet brown paper packaging (should we unnerve our husbands). I myself have been forced to claim recent investment purchases have been bargains from TK Maxx (gasp). There are certain things a lady must do to keep her man happy…

As a demonstration of my moral “Recessionista” high ground, I informed the girls that I intend to distribute home made preserves and cookies as festive gifts this Christmas. Note to self: purchase trendy new Nigella recipe book (who does her Botox?) for Albena the housekeeper – well you didn’t seriously expect me to do the cooking did you (smirk)?

My chum Vicki finds my new found frugal philosophy extremely entertaining and sent me an instructive email this afternoon for inspiration. She is joking, isn’t she?

How to make festive gift bedroom slippers:

These slippers are:
* Disposable and biodegradable
* Environmentally friendly
* Soft and hygienic
* Non-slip – there are grip strips on the soles.
* Fresh smelling as they have built in deodorant!
* They come in three convenient sizes: Regular, Light day, and Get out the Sand Bags.

You will need four (new) Always Ultra sanitary pads, glue and decorations of your choice to make each pair.

1. Lay one towel on a flat surface, this will form the cushioned sole of the slipper.
2. Wrap a second towel around the sole pad to form a luxurious strap.
3. Tape or glue each side of the strap securely to the bottom of the sole.
4. Construct a second slipper in the same manner.
5. Decorate slippers with silk flowers, ribbons, spangles etc.
