Name of product: Lob written by Linda Newbery and published by David Fickling Books.

The blurb: “This is Linda Newbery’s fifth story for David Fickling Books. Her first and second, The Shell House and Sisterland, were both shortlisted for the Carnegie medal and Set in Stone was the winner of the Costa Children’s Book Award 2006. The author of more than thirty books for children and young adults, Linda is a frequent speaker in schools and at festivals and conferences, and tutors courses for writers of all ages.
Stand quietly in a park, garden, or the woods one day. Listen! Watch! If you are one of the lucky ones, you might see him. Lob! A green man. You have to be a special person to see Lob, that’s what Grandpa Will says. Lucy’s parents don’t believe that he exists, but Lucy does. And she’s delighted when she finally catches sight of the green man in Grandpa’s garden. Then something awful happens, and Lucy’s life is turned upside down. Back at home in London, she wonders whether she’ll ever see Lob again. Will he come and find her?”
First impressions: This book has the appearance of an engaging read, thanks to the work of illustrator Pam Smy. My eight year old son was instantly drawn in, as his grandpa has an enormous garden in Wales, and the story immediately has him spellbound. This is the first “chapter book” he has read completely alone (sob), he is almost grown up!
Ease of Use: This “grown up” book, with small text and few illustrations, took several attempts for my eight year old son to read, but he kept coming back to it, and took great pride in completing it. An engaging read.
Pros: Reading this book was a challenge to my perfect boy, but he kept returning to it until he completed it. It gave him a great sense of achievement.
Cons: This may be a challenge to less able young readers (my son is top of his class naturellement!).
Value for money: £10.99 – I will not be permitted to pass this book on or give it away, as it has acquired special significance as the first chapter book my tiny boy has completed alone!
