Name of product: Locale, an Italian restaurant, with branches at County Hall, Balham, Blackheath, East Dulwich and Fulham.
Price: 2 course kids menu £5.95, a la carte main course from £5.95.
The blurb: ”Locale are warm, laid back and welcoming restaurants with bustling open kitchens at their hub. We have 5 restaurants in total with our most recent opening in June 2009 in Balham. Locale strives to bring its customers a true Italian food experience. All of the fresh ingredients are bought from London markets to ensure the best quality and flavours. Italian ingredients are used whenever possible, including flour, eggs and olive oil and all the dishes are made to authentic Italian recipes to ensure guests get a true taste of Italy.
The seasonal a la carte menu offers all of the traditional Italian dishes with plenty of choice for meat and fish eaters as well as vegetarians as well as homemade breads and freshly baked in-store desserts. Our beverage features delicious, fresh fruit cocktails and great wines by the glass from small producers wherever possible with of course fantastic Italian coffee and beer.”
First impressions: A warm, bustling, well designed interior. The staff are cheerful and accommodating. The kids menu includes pizza, meatballs, chicken escalope and ice cream. What struck me most was how welcoming the staff are of children.
The menu is mouth watering and I really didn’t know what to choose! Everything was very tasty, well prepared and beautifully presented. You don’t have to bring children with you to this restaurant, but there is no reason why you should not. What a refreshing change!
Ease of Use: The service was quick and attentive, but not precious. I felt relaxed eating with my children. The food and drinks arrived efficiently and far exceeded our expectations of a local Italian restaurant. Service was never far away and there is a busy programme of events, including Jazz evenings to look out for.
Pros: Ideal for a relaxed Sunday lunch with the kids, or a quick coffee or glass of vino during the week. This is a “shoulders down” restaurant, the children can be themselves, no-one is tutting if they make a noise or judging them if they drop a fork. The menu has something for everyone and all of the ingredients are freshly prepared. What a find!
Cons: Why can’t they open a branch in West Dulwich?
Value for money: 5/5, we will be back, regularly!
