Name of product: Moshi Monsters Website
Price: Free but you can become a member for £4.95/month, £23.95/6months or £29.95 for 12 months
The blurb: “The game was devised by Mind Candy, a company with just 40 staff, based in Battersea. In just over 18 months, it has attracted 24 million players, making it one of the fastest-growing children’s games in the world. The game, for six to 12-year-olds, mixes fun, education, puzzle-solving and social networking It has been variously dubbed “Facebook’s Little Brother” or “Bebo For Tots”
Visitors to the site can adopt their very own pet Monster, give it a name and design its color scheme. Each Monster has a lively personality that develops the more it is played with. Monster owners can nurture their pet by solving daily puzzle games to earn Rox, the in-game currency. Rox can be used to buy weird and wonderful things in the virtual shop to keep Monsters healthy and happy. Monster owners can make new friends and connect with existing friends through a wide variety of safe social networking features such as Monster blogs, Newsfeeds, pinboards and buddy lists. We’re hard at work dreaming up all sorts of new features to expand the game play and world of Moshi Monsters
First impressions: “Cool and funky!” – according to my 8 year old son!
Ease of Use: Very easy to use navigate around – the site was a sensation this summer
Pros: You can design your very own monster and adopt your own pet monster, hours of interactive fun
Cons: You cant do that much without becoming a full member
Value for money: I don’t see these sites as particularly good value for money as my children love them right up until the membership is purchased and they then promptly forget to go online again until their membership needs to be renewed. Other games, such as those for the Nintendo DS require a one off payment

A subscription service is always a risk where fickle children are concerned. However the customisation aspect is good and there are all sorts of merchandise out there now including http://www.thinkskins.co.uk/MoshiMonstersSkins which supplies a variety of Moshi skins for different consoles and iphones etc.
