The Brazilian Blow Dry
Posted by dulwichmum on Wed 23 December 2009
Name of service: The Brazilian Blow Dry as advocated by Nicole Richie
Price: From £150, depending on length of hair.
The blurb: An innovative Keratin based treatment, originally developed in Brazil, now available in the US and Europe. Unlike other products such as relaxers or the Japanese thermal conditioning, the Brazilian Blow Dry straightens the hair without damaging or changing its texture. The treatment can be used on all hair types, including chemically treated hair (colored, permed, relaxed, highlighted and bleached).
Taking care of the hair after the Keratin Treatment is applied is effortless. The amount of time required to style hair will decrease dramatically, in some cases, to wash and go. Others require some blow drying and minimum styling time. This treatment restores hair resiliency: humidity, rain or sweat will no longer affect the hairstyle. No more frizzy hair! The results last two to five months, the treatment fades progressively as hair is washed
This treatment is currently the talk of the town! The original formulation, developed in Brazil, contained formaldehyde which caused concerns as the fumes produced during the treatment were thought to cause cancer. The formaldehyde has now been replaced with a harmless plant extract, so the treatment is no longer dangerous but washes out gradually.
First impressions: My hair is actually rather coarse, and normally takes over an hour to style. I spend a fortune on premium products, a professional hair dryer and specialist large barreled brush followed by a GHD straightening iron. Anything that could reduce the amount of time I must spend on my hair each day, to achieve my glossy “do” would be very welcome.
Ease of Use: The stylist washed my hair with a clarifying shampoo, leaving it to soak, to open the cuticle. The hair was then rinsed and blow dried, until it was up to eighty per cent dry. After this, the treatment solution was applied to small, individual sections of the hair, one at a time, it was then systematically straightened using a ceramic straightening iron. The entire process took approximately 2 hours. My hair looked amazing but was still a little “tacky”.
For the next three days I was not permitted to put my hair behind my ears, put my glasses on my head or use any hair clips, and when I woke in the morning, I had to straighten any “bumps” in my hair with the straightening iron or hair dryer. It was incredibly difficult to resist washing my hair. After three days my hair was more than ready for a good wash. I returned to the salon where they washed my locks with sulphate free shampoo and the drying/styling took less than ten minutes! My hair felt as silky as a child’s.
Pros: My hair was no longer as volumous, held its style and is silky smooth. It took minutes for me to dry and was so very straight and glossy. It looked so much more fabulous than Cheryl Cole avec extensions!
Cons: The treatment costs £150 every 2 to 4 months. They claim that hi-lights and colouring will not strip the treatment from the hair but that is not true. My hair was hi-lighted again, as usual, 6 weeks after this treatment was applied, and it completely stripped the treatment from my hair. I can’t really face the whole “dirty hair for 3 days” sensation again so soon and to be honest, it makes the treatment too much hassle.
Value for money: This would be good value if it lasted as long as they claim. I have been quoted almost £500 for chemical straightening, and as my hair is bleached, I have been advised that chemical straightening would destroy my hair. This treatment makes my hair feel sensational, but waiting for 3 days with the chemicals on the hair before it is washed, along with the price tag, means that it is just not worth it.
Stockists: Jo Partridge, Croxted Road, SE21, Toni and Guy and soon to come to a great salon near you.

I was very ill after such a treatment, suffering nausea and headaches.
Keratin is not added to the hair, its the formaldehyde that causes the hair to relax. The amount of formaldehyde varies between brands.
Cheaper Brazilian brands are generally imported and used by mobile hairdressers who can treat your hair with any old chemicals.
These are strong chemicals more commonly used in the funeral parlour.
