Name of product: The Tooth Fairy

The blurb: “Dwayne Johnson is “The Tooth Fairy,” also known as Derek Thompson, a hard-charging minor league hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster’s dreams, he’s sentenced to one week’s hard labour as a real tooth fairy, complete with the requisite tutu, wings and magic wand. At first, Derek “can’t handle the tooth” – bumbling and stumbling as he tries to furtively wing his way through strangers’ homes…doing what tooth fairies do. But as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams.”

First impressions: I love to take my baby girl – OK so Freya is 7, but she is the only baby I have (dabs tear from eye), to see sparkly, fairytale type animated flicks – this however, is not one of those films. Burly 8 year old Max has recently become very cynical about Santa and the Tooth Fairy (sob), and so, he immediately expressed an interest in coming to see this film – no doubt he intended to pop pins in his little sister’s balloon. Max adores films with lots of action and energy, and it is so difficult to find a film that satisfies both children.

Ease of Use: It’s a film! Just book the tickets, turn up and grab some popcorn. How simple can half-term entertainment be?

Pros: Both of my poppets adored this film, there were plenty of laughs, plenty of fairy magic and plenty of action. This is simply the perfect film for a half term trip to the cinema for those entertaining both boys and girls, we even enjoyed the music! I flew home afterward and gave my poppets a crash course in Simple Minds and the music of the 80’s. No more nursery tunes in our house – hurrah! We had a great morning’s entertainment at this film and the best thing of all is that my son now believes in The Tooth Fairy again!

Cons: I wish that more films would try to achieve this appeal for both boys and girls. In general, it is impossible to find a film that appeals to mixed audiences of children. This film hits the mark.

Value for money: Worth every penny – although we went to the preview so we didn’t have to pay, clearly! My poppets want to go and see this film again this week, during half term, they enjoyed it so much.

Dulwichmum verdict: ★★★★★

Stockists: All good cinemas, nationwide from Friday 28th May 2010.
